BASF SE aims to change the way batteries are produced to create healthier planet with focus on manganese

BASF aims to change the way batteries are produced to create healthier planet with focus on manganese The world’s largest chemical producer’s long-term battery materials strategy incorporates its goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 25% by 2030 and to net-zero by 2050. BASF will look to use more manganese in the production of cathode active materials. German-based BASF SE (FRA:BAS), the world’s largest chemical producer, has outlined its long-term battery materials strategy, focused on cathode active materials, including manganese. The cathode part of a battery is the positive electrode that acquires electrons from the external circuit and is reduced during the electrochemical reaction, and typically the primary active component of the cathode has been cobalt.

The US has Mmetals Problem - Lithium, Graphite, Copper, Nickel Supplies :: The Market Oracle ::

Years of neglecting its critical metal supplies is catching up with the United States, as demand for the raw materials needed to build a new green economy that rejects fossil fuels gears up. US President Joe Biden just announced a $2.3 trillion infrastructure spending package aimed partially at shifting the US transportation system from gas and diesel-based to battery-powered, and more support for renewable energies such as wind and solar over carbon-based sources like natural gas. The plan is big on promises and appears to benefit many sectors, but details are scant on how the country will source the metals needed for repairing and replacing traditional “blacktop” infrastructure, and minerals that will feed a brand new “mine to battery” supply chain.

GM Is Betting Big On Electric Vehicles

GM Is Betting Big On Electric Vehicles By Tsvetana Paraskova - Mar 14, 2021, 12:00 PM CDT Weeks after General Motors pledged to work for an all-electric future, the highest-selling U.S. automaker announced this week a partnership with MIT spinoff SolidEnergy Systems to speed up the commercialization of lithium metal batteries that could dramatically cut electric vehicle (EV) costs and boost range.  GM Ventures was an early investor in lithium metal battery innovator SolidEnergy Systems in 2015 when GM and SES began a close working relationship.  Now GM and SES plan to build a manufacturing prototyping line in Woburn, Massachusetts, for a high-capacity, pre-production battery by 2023. GM’s lithium metal battery with a protected anode will feature a combination of affordability, high performance, and energy density, the carmaker said.
