Photo: The CW “Must there be a Superman?” The question rife with opportunities for meta-textual deconstruction was first proffered by author Elliot S. Maggin in a 1972 comic book story (and echoed by news anchor Charlie Rose in the 2016 feature film “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice”), but if we take the Man of Steel’s continued ubiquity on television as any indication, then the answer is a resounding yes. The CW’s new series, “Superman & Lois,” premiering with a two-hour event on Tuesday, Feb. 23, is a fresh take on the classic story that not only demonstrates the continued resiliency of the Last Son of Krypton’s myth, but also makes a strong case for why Superman still matters to audiences new and old.
