MAYOR WILL HAVE SECURITY PROTECTION IN PUBLIC SETTINGS: Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler will now have a security detail with him nearly every time he goes out in public following the Jan. 24 pepper-spraying by the mayor of a lawyer who followed him to his car outside a McMenamins pub. The mayor has enhanced security measures, and we believe they will be effective in protecting the mayor s safety, said Jim Middaugh, a spokesman for Wheeler. Updated February 1 Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler will now have a security detail with him nearly every time he goes out in public following the Jan. 24 incident where the mayor pepper-sprayed a lawyer outside a McMenamins pub. The mayor has enhanced security measures, and we believe they will be effective in protecting the mayor s safety, said Jim Middaugh, a spokesman for the mayor. The city contracts with a private security firm called G4S Secure Solutions, Middaugh added. Wheeler has always had the personal discretion to call for the security detail, Middaugh said, as have previous Portland mayors dating back decades. Now, however, Wheeler will use the security team nearly every time he s out in public.

Mayor Ted Wheeler was dining out at Cafe Nell’s patio last night when he was approached and taunted by left-leaning protesters. In cell phone footage released on Twitter, a small group of Portlanders approached the mayor while he was finishing dining at the New American restaurant in Nob Hill; one individual, whose face does not appear on screen, seemed to take the lead, repeatedly cursing at the mayor and addressing him by his middle name Tevis. The protester accused him of failing at his mayoral work and criticized him for the continuing sweeps of tent encampments. “I think you need to do your job as a fucking mayor. I think you’re a disgrace,” he replies after Wheeler says that he thinks the group should leave. “How dare you do sweeps when people are still on the streets.”
