The first black member of the Virginia Senate since reconstruction, he served in the state senate for 16 years before he was elected Lieutenant Governor, becoming the first africanamerican elected to statewide office in virginia. Four years later he followed that up in 1989 when he became the nations first elected africanamerican governor. As governor, doug wilder guided the state through a difficult recession. A democrat, he briefly saw his partys 1992 president ial nomination, then years later in 2004 he became the first popularly elected mayor of the city of richmond in more than 50 years.
