Santa Barbara High used bombing jump serves and the blistering hits of Sam Meister and Alex Rottman to sweep San Marcos in the first crosstown boys volleyball match in more than year Wednesday night at J.R. Richards Gym.
The scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-20.
The Dons’ powerful serving took the Royals out of system several times and set up overpasses that were pounded or blocked for points. Rottman had four aces and Meister added a pair.

San Marcos boys volleyball coach Roger Kuntz pointed out that his team is at the same stage it was last season when the COVID-19 pandemic forced all sports activity to shut down.
“This year we’ve started out at 2-0,” he said at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at The Creekside Restaurant. “Last year we started out 2-0, and that’s how we ended because that’s all we got.”
He did one of his fantastic individual efforts, said DP coach Matt York. Dos Pueblos played with a ton of passion and spirit, said coach McLean. They were clearly up for this game. Coach York has a solid group of players who work really hard for him and made it hard for us to get into our offensive rhythm.
McLean was pleased with his team s defensive effort. Our defense was solid tonight with sophomore Justin Hess, senior JC Orgaz, junior Juan Escobar and junior Miguel Mondragon, he said. Seniors Uli Velez and Sam Friedman split time in the goal. We have been impressed with their organization and the way they start our offense.
