T-Mobile lowers capex guidance, raises profit outlook

T-Mobile said it expects to make more money in the next few years than it previously expected following its merger with Sprint. At the same time, the company said it expects to spend less on its network than expected over the coming years. T-Mobile also said it expects to gain between 7 million and 8 million fixed wireless Internet customers within the next five years. That figure is slightly below the estimates T-Mobile provided in 2018, when it said it would gain 9.5 million customers within that rough time frame. Company executives promised to hold a launch event for T-Mobile s fixed wireless Internet product – where they plan to disclose pricing and rollout details – later this month.

Cable upstream channel purchases almost doubled in Q4 2020 - Dell Oro

Reflecting data demands seen during the pandemic, cable operator spending on upstream channel purchases climbed 96% in Q4 2020 versus 2019, according to fresh data from Jeff Heynen, VP, broadband access and home networking, at Dell Oro Group. By comparison, global spending on cable network downstream channel purchases climbed just 3% during the period. For all of 2020, upstream channel purchases by cable operators rose 43%, while downstream channel purchases actually dipped 8%. Heynen said those purchasing trends are a clear sign that operators are starting to push ahead with mid-split and high-split network upgrades that expand the amount of spectrum being dedicated to the upstream. He also believes it s an indicator that cable operators are starting to add Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) capabilities to their hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks to help get a handle on the upstream pressure. OFDMA, an advanced and more efficient modulation scheme for

WiCipedia: The trials and tribulations of salary negotiation

This week in our WiCipedia roundup: Melinda Gates takes DC universities by storm; what the Bumble IPO means for women in tech; International Women s Day celebrates all women; and more. An anonymous survey from Blind, a company that surveys people in tech, has found that salary negotiating isn t always a comfortable topic for women (surprise, surprise). Dice explains that the survey broke down the findings by tech company, and found that the results were wildly different based on the company. For example, at PayPal, 65% of women stated I always negotiate but it is uncomfortable, while at Lyft this number plummets to 17%. At Airbnb, 60% of women agreed with the statement I go hard when it comes to salary negotiation, yet only 9% of women at VMware said the same thing. While women seem to have the reputation of being non-negotiators, that hasn t historically been the case – company culture has simply favored men. As one Microsoft employee put it, I always negotiate, and almost al

Comcast s wireless biz to reach profitability in 2021 without any offload, CFO says

Comcast s mobile business is poised to turn the financial corner and achieve profitability this year without any offload benefits, according to company CFO Mike Cavanagh. Comcast s Xfinity Mobile service largely relies on an MVNO deal with Verizon. But Comcast gets a financial benefit – in the form of transport cost savings – when portions of wireless traffic are instead offloaded to Comcast s Wi-Fi network or, later, on new networks that utilize Comcast s licensed CBRS spectrum. Late last month, Charter Communications CEO Tom Rutledge estimated that his company could use its CBRS network to offload about one-third of its current MVNO traffic. Comcast last year snapped up a swath of licensed CBRS spectrum covering the bulk of its traditional cable footprint, but, similar to a strategy underway at fellow cable op Charter Communications, Comcast will likely target deployments to high-traffic areas. And, even in those cases, initial deployments will be determined on a thorough c
