Petition seeks end of discrimination
NUKUALOFA, Tonga (Tonga Broadcasting Corp. Sept. 24, 2009) – WOMEN in Tonga continue with the push for the government to ratify CEDAW. Despite discussion of the matter has been concluded by Parliament and Cabinet.
Various local women s group yesterday lodged a letter of petition to the Acting Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet Paula Ma u.
The petition was to voice their dissatisfaction over Cabinet and the Legislative Assembly s decision not to ratify the Convention for Elimination of Discrimination against Women - CEDAW.
The letter stated the reason why they are fighting for the ratification of the convention, as they believe that it is the only tool that can protect and ensure safety of women.
