CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - A group of educators protested on Monday the decision made by the Cabarrus County Board of Education to reopen schools for full-time in-person learning for some students.
“15 North Carolina educators have died of COVID, that’s 15 too many. It is a preventable disease. We need to be caring for our students and school staff the same way we care for our families,” said Cabarrus County Schools teacher Meredith Newman. “We want kids in the classroom, we want to fully reopen, but it’s just not safe for that yet.”

The Cabarrus County school board voted 5-2 Saturday to bring some students back to school four days a week starting Feb. 16. Currently, all schools are in Plan B, with students attending two days a week of in-person classes and three days of remote learning.
The new Plan A schedule will apply to students in prekindergarten through third grade, as well as students with disabilities, homeless students and English language learners. Fourth- and fifth-graders are scheduled to return to Plan A on March 15.
