CAA: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will not be repealed, stating that it is the government s sovereign right to ensure Indian citizenship and that the law does not violate constitutional provisions. He criticised opposition leaders for politicising the issue and emphasised the need to provide refuge and justice to persecuted minorities. The CAA aims to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived before December 31, 2014.
Legal action will be taken against those causing damage during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Assam, the Guwahati Police has warned.
