There will be 300 more beds in hospitals for treatment of COVID-19 patients in Virudhunagar district.
The decision came following a review meeting between officials of various departments and Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Minister for Industries Thangam Thennarasu here on Thursday.
The Ministers said the district had 1,420 beds in government and private hospitals to treat positive patients. Besides, COVID cares centres were also set up to treat asymptomatic patients.

Even as Virudhunagar district recorded over 7,000 new positive cases since April 1, hundreds of devotees gathered outside Badhrakaliamman Temple in Sivakasi for Chithirai festival celebration on Wednesday night.
A huge crowd gathered outside the temple even as its gates were locked as no devotees were allowed inside temples for darshan in view of the lockdown. The devotees who started gathering around 6 p.m. swelled in numbers around 8 p.m. Social distancing went for a toss and many of the devotees were not wearing mask, according to local sources. Only a limited number of police personnel were posted there.
Votes in control units with technical snag will not be counted

Under new rules of the Election Commission, Control Units (CUs) of electronic voting machines (EVMs) will not be repaired, when they develop malfunctioning during counting of votes on May 2.
“If any CU develops technical snag, no effort will be taken to repair it, but such unit will be kept under the custody of Returning Officer and the counting of votes in other CUs will continue without stoppage,” District Election Officer R. Kannan said.
In earlier elections, such malfunctioning units were taken up for repair to enable counting of votes.

The district has reported one more COVID-19 death after a 67-year-old woman died at a private hospital in Chennai on Wednesday.
The media bulletin said that the woman who had tested positive on April 10 was admitted to the hospital with fever for 14 days, cough and difficulty in breathing for two days. She died due to COVID-19 pneumonia.
Meanwhile, the number of fresh positive cases kept increasing and on Friday it stood at 80 and the total number of active cases shot up to 433 after discharge of 14 patients.

Materials have reached 2,370 polling booths

The stage is set for Tuesday’s polling in all seven Assembly constituencies in Virudhunagar district where all polling personnel and materials have reached 2,370 polling booths on Monday evening.
Virudhunagar Collector, R. Kannan, said that after issuing the appointment orders to the 9,480 polling personnel, they were taken to their respective polling booths through special buses.
The electronic voting machines, along with VVPATs and stationery items for each of the booth were taken by the zonal parties who are escorted by armed police personnel. “We have ensured that the polling personnel are available at the booths to receive the polling materials,” he added.
