Cocaine, LSD allegedly found after traffic stop

Premium Content Subscriber only Police have laid extra charges against a NSW man allegedly found with a host of drugs in his possession near Byron Bay last year. Robert Vandermeer, 59, from Rathmines - south of Newcastle - was arrested on December 30 after police stopped his vehicle on the Pacific Highway at Ewingsdale. Police claimed they stopped Mr Vandermeer because he allegedly failed to use his indicator. Police said they found an array of drugs, including cannabis leaf and resin, MDMA, cocaine and LSD as well as $21,700 cash in the vehicle. Mr Vandermeer was not required to appear when his case was mentioned before Byron Bay Local Court on Monday.

Man charged over break-in awaits police response to subpoena

Premium Content Subscriber only Police have yet to file documents in response to a subpoena in the case of an alleged break-in at a Byron Shire home, a court has heard. Matthew James McAlister, 34, was not required to face Byron Bay Local Court when the case was mentioned on Monday. Mr McAlister, from Raymond Terrace, is facing a charge of aggravated break and enter in company involving theft. He has previously entered a plea of not guilty. Police will allege Mr McAlister and two other people broke into a New Brighton home between 7.30am and 7pm on April 15, 2020. They will allege the group stole a G Shock sports watch, Rolex watch, Honda motorbike, old mobile phones, an unknown amount of food, alcohol, toiletries and linen and $500 cash from the home.

Bindhi Gaze, 25, faced Byron Bay Local Court when his case was mentioned on Monday. He has pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, intentionally choking a person without consent, two counts of destroying or damaging property, stalking or intimidation and having custody of a knife in a public place. His solicitor, Kylie Anderson-Clarke, asked the court to vary his bail conditions as he was moving to a new address in Lennox Head. She tendered to the court a letter to Gaze s sister, who is his bail surety, confirming she was content with that change. The prosecution did not oppose this change.
