(5 out of 5 stars) Peter Phillips and the Tallis Scholars give a lucid and sensitively shaped account of Byrd s Great Service. Theirs is a more intimate performance than one might expect to encounter in one of the great English cathedrals; they are fewer in number and thus achieve greater clarity of texture. The recording is quite excellent: it is made in a church acoustic (the Church of St. John, Hackney) and captures detail perfectly. It includes three other anthems.
