The lack of reliable access to broadband internet service for many in Baltimore, particularly the poor, has profound economic and social consequences. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this painfully clear with its abrupt shifts to online learning, remote work, and telemedicine. A new analysis from Johns Hopkins University s 21st Century Cities Initiative says the city could move towards digital equity, with a roadmap of recommendations built on existing knowledge of Baltimore s digital assets and the experiences of other cities. Too often, the solutions [to repair the digital divide] have been sought in silos for schools, businesses, public housing, and residential areas when we need a broad solution that will serve the whole city, the report states. The city needs a holistic plan to address digital equity that reaches households, the young and the elderly, and small businesses that can drive economic growth in the city.

Johns Hopkins University s Coronavirus Resource Center has launched a tracking tool to offer daily updates and nationwide perspective on the progress of the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in the United States.
The vaccine tracker shows the latest numbers for doses administered by U.S. states that have started to make this data available. As of Monday, Dec. 21, data for 21 states is included, and the tracker will expand as more states make this data available, new vaccines are approved, and consistent data standards are established.

By mapping the brain activity of expert computer programmers while they puzzled over code, Johns Hopkins University scientists have found the neural mechanics behind this increasingly vital skill.
Though researchers have long suspected the brain mechanism for computer programming would be similar to that for math or even language, this study revealed that when seasoned coders work, most brain activity happens in the network responsible for logical reasoning, though in the left brain region, which is favored by language.

On the center s United States COVID-19 map, viewers can toggle to two new pages for daily updates on both overall hospital occupancy and ICU occupancy. Both maps display the most up-to-date information on hospital ICU occupancy rates in the U.S. The data is sourced from the Department of Health and Human Services.
On each map, the darker the county is shaded, the closer it is to reaching hospital capacity.
