in niger, as european nations begin evacuating hundreds of citizens from the country, the first of three french planes sent to evacuate european citizens from niger has arrived back in paris with more than 250 people on board. another french aircraft is still at the capital s airport waiting to bring more people back. some countries in the region have come to the new leadership s defense, including burkina faso, mali and guinea declaring that any military invention in niger would be considered a declaration of war. niger is located in the sahel region. it s a key region for western countries in counterterrorism operations. for more on how western governments are responding to the crisis, our africa correspondent catherine byaruhanga sent in this report.
after russian troops pulled out of the city of kherson on friday. ukraine regained control of the southern city but there are reports that the kremlin s forces are making new fortifications on the left bank of the dnipro river. and russia has chosen a port city in southeast ukraine to be, what it calls, the temporary capital of the kherson region. fears have also been expressed after satellite images show significant new damage to a major dam in the area. the bbc s catherine byaruhanga sent this report from the capital, kyiv. this is the vital kakhovka dam 36 miles north of kherson. it s one of ukraine s biggest hydroelectric power plants.

William Byaruhanga
Mr Byaruhanga is the Attorney General, also known as the head of the Bar. He joined the Justice ministry in 2016 and has served as such since then.
One of the high profile cases he handled was the famous age limit appeal before the Supreme Court about two years ago and the subsequent reference at the East African Court of Justice in Arusha, Tanzania.
Francis Atoke
Mr Atoke is the current Solicitor General at the Justice Ministry, a position he has held since 2012.
He joined the ministry in 1987 and has since risen through the ranks and worked as deputy Administrator General from 1997 to 2009.
