Death Penalty Not Sought In Craig Lang Case: Feds

Oksana Parafeniuk for BuzzFeed News Craig Lang (center) talks to men in the military uniform who came to support him, in the lobby of the Kyiv Court of Appeal in Kyiv on Feb. 18, 2021. The US Department of Justice will waive the death penalty in the case of Craig Lang, an Army veteran who fought with a far-right paramilitary unit in Ukraine and whom authorities have charged in the killing of a married couple in southwestern Florida in April 2018. The case is being watched closely by US officials and experts studying far-right extremism who have been increasingly concerned about Americans who travel to Ukraine to train with far-right militant groups and gain combat experience.

Chad Wolf To Resign At Midnight As DHS Jump Starts Biden Inauguration Prep

January 11, 2021 5:28 p.m. The top official at the Department of Homeland Security will resign effective at midnight, according to a letter to DHS personnel shared with TPM. Chad Wolf had just hours earlier announced that he would move up the security planning for Joe Biden’s inauguration. The prep work will now begin on Wednesday rather than Tuesday next week. FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor will become acting DHS secretary with just days left in President Donald Trump’s term, Wolf’s letter said. Wolf was out of town, in Qatar, when Trump supporters bum rushed the Capitol last week. Unlike Wednesday’s events, Biden’s inauguration is designated a National Special Security Event (NSSE) meaning that the Secret Service, which is housed within DHS, takes charge of security.
