“Prairies are sometimes called ‘upside-down forests,’ because so much life is below the ground,” says narrator Penny Preston in the new documentary “The Last Prairie,” about the Jennings Prairie in Slippery Rock.
It’s a beautiful image that implies there’s often more than meets the eye in the natural world. At 20 acres, the Jennings Prairie is just a tiny sliver of land. It seems like a picturesque meadow tucked inside the Jennings Environmental Education Center but it’s actually a small but complete prairie ecosystem. It is the only public and protected prairie in Pennsylvania.

$100 gift cards go to furloughed workers in county Harold Aughton/Butler Eagle
A countywide partnership raised more than $100,000 for 1,000 laid-off workers in the hospitality industry throughout the county.
Jack Cohen, president of the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau, said that $100 Visa gift cards were distributed to employers for their furloughed workers, “so their spirits would also be lifted.”
Cohen said 800 cards would be distributed this week to those who registered for them and the remaining 200 would be distributed before the end of the year.
Cohen said the tourism bureau, county commissioners and Center for Community Resources partnered in the We Care Butler County project to raise money for those whose jobs were affected by Gov. Tom Wolf s second wave of COVID-19 protective mitigation measures put in place Dec. 12. The campaign was announced Dec. 10.
Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau is offering a special incentive for its Butler County gift certificates. For each gift certificate purchased, buyers will be entered into a drawing for one of three prize packages, valued over $300 each.
The new incentive program runs through Dec. 31. Three winners will be randomly selected and announced in January.
The first package includes a two-night stay in a cabin at Bear Run Campground and Butler County gift certificates.
The second package features a two-night stay at The Mainstay at Saxonburg bed and breakfast, a Best of Butler County gift basket and Butler County gift certificates.
County launches campaign to assist hospitality industry workers Seb Foltz/Butler Eagle
County officials are launching a campaign to raise money to provide financial relief to restaurant and other hospitality industry employees facing layoffs as a result of new state restrictions aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19.
The Butler County commissioners, Center for Community Resources and Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau are collaborating in the campaign, which was announced Thursday, just a few hours after Gov. Tom Wolf declared a temporary suspension of all indoor dining, a 10-person limit on indoor gatherings, a 50-person limit on outdoor gatherings and a 50% capacity limit on all other in-person businesses from Saturday until 8 a.m. Jan. 4.
