At least three people have died after a helicopter crashed in the grand canyon. It happened yesterday afternoon. Police say the chopper was carrying a pilot and six passengers. It reportedly crashed near quartermaster canyon. Rescue efforts are becoming difficult to due rugged terrain and poor conditions. The san Martin Airport is here. The plane landed here which means they had to tow it northbound, exit the freeway and get back on the other direction for a total distance of 4 1 2 miles. What a drive it turned out to be. The pickup truck towing the plane went at about the pace of a leisurely stroll. When it came time to merge back on the freeway, the chp ran a traffic break and yes, the backup was horrendous. Across the wide lanes of 101 the plane could actually make good time but once on surface streets crews often had to unhook the plane and wiggle it through by hand to get past traffic signs, mailboxes and fences sometimes with inches to spare.
