doors for black folks, wasn t just about black folks, it was about america and who we are, and the legacy that then opened the doors for americans with disabilities and latinos and asian americans and women. and that s a legacy we have to be proud of but we have to understand what that spirit was about. it wasn t just about one race it was about who all of us are. nbc s kristin welker in selma, alabama. good morning kristin. tell me what you re seeing and what we are expecting in the next day or so. reporter: jose good morning to you. you can really feel the energy building in selma as this community and as the nation prepares to mark the anniversary of the march here in selma. people have started to arrive by the bus loads. people have been flying in to selma to mark this momentous occasion. to remind everyone what this was about, this was a march for voting rights for african
afternoon to hear whether they agree with this or whether they will challenge it or whether we ll move forward in a in a cooperative way or not. i suspect they will say they will cooperate. there seems to be a lot of will here to try and change things given what happened here the violence and the mayhem that happened here just a few months ago. and on the ground as we had followed for a long time the series of protesters peaceful protesters that stayed in ferguson. has there been any reaction from those camps about what the d.o.j. has come up with? yes. that s are the people i m talking to who are protest organizationers and other organizers and others and there is a large group from ferguson who are headed down to selma, alabama, for the anniversary of the march down there to take part in that. several hundred several bus-loads as i understand it. but again, i think people feel like they feel vindicated by
to hold on to their states, many congressmen in texas think he s not doing enough, think he should have gone down to the border, he should be pushing harder. i want you to talk about these other communities crying foul that texas is shipping immigrants to them without their knowledge coror consent. the federal government months people around all the time, they move detainees from one place to another, so it s not as though the president is doing any wrong in this regard, legally what he is doing potentially wrong is not giving a heads up to state and local officials that this is happening and he has moved some de he s sent several bus loads of these people up there and they are somewhat taken by surprise, they say this creates a littpolitical problem for the.
voluntarily during this administration. he rarely gets credit for that. i think those facts are true. i think what s mystifying to some people is that if he has been ahead of the game with regard to those deportations, why is he not ahead of the game on this issue? this has just happened. this is new information. he s had time in the last week to do something. we ve seen these bus loads of children coming in from central america. he has a more stringent policy. george w. bush wanted to put them through a process he said something that s not true. this did not just start happening. ask anybody in texas. that s baloney. the flow of immigrants from central america and mexico has been an ongoing crisis at the border. rick perry has been saying it for a long, long time. two years. talking about recent bus loads of children. the truth is i tell you what you are representing. you want open borders. so does president obama. you know the
growing more intense by the moment. tens of thousands of children from central america living in dangerous and deplorable conditions are now escaping to the united states at alarming rates. nbc s miguel almaguer is along the border in california where emotions are running high on both sides. reporter: thousands of undocumented immigrants from central america, including several families with very young children, find themselves in the middle of a raging debate. they are being held inside facilities like this one all across the southwest. as you know, the city of murieta has become a flash point for the immigration debate. many undocumented immigrants, three bus loads, were on their way here last week when they were turned around after their buses were met by angry protesters. later on today, border patrol agents tell us they expect a flight of undocumented immigrants from texas to arrive here in california. they expect those undocumented immigrants to be taken to local facilities to b
