half-staff at the u.s. capital. welcome back at the top of the hour. with us is mark halpern and michael crowley is back on the set with us. nice to have you with us. we are starting with that breaking news this morning. senator robert byrd, the longest serving congressman in u.s. history, has died at the age of 92. it happened at about 3:00 this morning. his spokesman said the west virginia democrat died peacefully at a fairfax, virginia, hospital. his death not expected to change the democrat s current majority in the senate because the governor joe manchin is a democrat and will appoint a democrat to serve the reminder of byrd s six-year term. byrd elected to the senate in 1958 after spending six years in the house and the senate majority leader in late my 70s and 80s and third line in succession for the presidency. he became more frail after the death of his wife irma in 2006
