BLM authorizes burro gather in Inyo and San Bernardino counties RIDGECREST, Calif. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ridgecrest Field Office has approved the gather and removal of up to 939 wild burros from the Centennial, Panamint, and Slate herd management areas over a ten-year period to address resource impacts and reduce the risk of burro-vehicle collisions. The gathered burros will be placed for adoption or sale. “The BLM gathers burros from public lands to not only safeguard the health of the animals but to protect the land as well,” said Carl Symons, Ridgecrest Field Manager.  “Left unchecked, burro populations can increase rapidly resulting in damage to rangelands.”

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ridgecrest Field Office proposes to gather and remove for adoption or sale up to 939 wild burros from the Centennial, Panamint, and Slate Range Herd Areas to address resource impacts and reduce the risk of burro-vehicle collisions.  “The excess in the wild burro population has damaged riparian habitat and impacted resources in and around the three herd areas and along roadways,” said Carl Symons Ridgecrest Field Manager. “Balancing the needs of resources and public safety by reducing the population is imperative and can provide benefits to the health of the Centennial, Panamint and Slate Range herds.”

BLM concludes Eagle Complex wild horse gather ELY, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Caliente and Cedar City field offices concluded the Eagle Complex wild horse gather on February 16, 2021. The BLM gathered 1,074 excess wild horses from in and around the Chokecherry, Eagle, and Mt. Elinore Herd Management Areas (HMAs) located in Lincoln County, Nevada, and Beaver and Iron counties, Utah. The BLM treated 50 mares with the fertility control vaccine GonaCon-Equine and released them back into the Eagle HMA. The purpose of the gather was to prevent undue or unnecessary degradation of the public lands associated with excess wild horses, and to restore a thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on public lands, consistent with the provisions of Section 1333(b) of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. BLM to conduct Eagle Complex wild horse gather ELY, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Caliente and Cedar City field offices on or about January 6, 2021 will begin gathering excess wild horses from in and around the Eagle Complex located near Pioche, Nev. The Complex consists of the Chokecherry, Eagle, and Mt. Elinor Herd Management Areas (HMAs). The BLM will gather up to 1,131 excess wild horses and remove up to 1,081 excess horses. The BLM will treat up to 50 mares with the fertility control vaccine GonaCon-Equine and release them back into the Eagle HMA. The current population estimate for the Eagle Complex is 1,415 wild horses, including the 2020 foal crop. Appropriate Management Level (AML) is 139-265 wild horses.
