Make a holiday connection with nature at MDC sites in the Kansas City area

MDC TO OFFER FREE VIRTUAL TRAINING IN CONDUCTING BUTTERFLY SURVEYS

Kansas City, Mo. – If you enjoy watching butterflies, you may also enjoy contributing to scientific knowledge about them. The Missouri Department of Conservation will offer a free virtual training session from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, on how to participate in the Missouri Butterfly Monitoring Network. Participants will learn about 25 of Missouri’s most common butterflies. They will learn how to identify them and how butterfly surveys are conducted. They will also complete one of the three requirements to qualify for participation in the surveys. The course will be taught by Tad Yankoski, entomologist for the Butterfly House, and Lisa Richter, MDC naturalist at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs.

Advance registration is required and can be done at mdc.mo.gov/events. If you have trouble registering or have other questions, call the host conservation center. Programs will be virtual or in-person, most held at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 N.W. Park Road, Blue Springs, 816-228-3766, or Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave., Kansas City, 816-759-7300. March 11 • Discovery Nature, Teen Trek & Tech-Spring Cleaning and Babies Singing: 6 to 7 p.m. at Burr Oak Woods. For ages 13 to 18. Registration is required by March 10. Learn about the do’s and don’ts when you encounter these neighborhood critters.
