Maldon and Burnham schools join bid to battle dementia | Maldon and Burnham Standard

Maldon s Plume Academy has put up a permanent banner to mark Dementia Action Week. It is hoping to become a dementia-friendly school. The scheme includes reducing the stigma surrounding dementia, boosting activities between generations and raising awareness about the illness. Statistics show one in three children and young people will know someone with dementia, often a grandparent but increasingly a parent. Youngsters at Burnham Primary and St Mary’s Primary, in the town, were also busy drawing forget-me-not flowers to display in shop windows throughout the week to raise awareness. And St Mary’s has been teaching the children about dementia by reading Grandad s Hat by Matt Elliott.

Burnham: Mum mad as schoolchild given place in Southminster | Maldon and Burnham Standard

FAMILIES in Burnham have expressed their anger after their children failed to secure places at their local primary schools. Many children in the area were expecting to start at Burnham Primary or St Mary’s this September. However, parents have now been told their child will be going to schools such as Southminster Primary, which can be up to an hour-long walk from the town. This is a major concern as transport links are not ideal and the road leading to Southminster has no pavement. Mum-of-two Dawn Wells, 31, lives in Burnham with partner Michael Kempster, 33. The couple hoped four-year-old daughter Savannah would be able to go to St Mary’s or Burnham Primary, but they were offered Southminster Primary.
