Reno endurane athete Fred Zalokar s death in Yosemite ruled accidental

Reno endurance athlete Fred Zalokar’s death was accidental, according to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office. Zalokar went missing July 24 in Yosemite National Park on a solo trip to remote Mt. Clark. His body was recovered July 27. Zalokar, 61, died of multiple injuries to the head, neck, chest and abdomen, according to the sheriff’s office. He was attempting a car-to-car ascent of Mt. Clark using an off-trail route from Bunnell Point in Little Yosemite Valley, according to the National Park Service. Zalokar moved to Reno in 1984 to follow his love for the mountains and starting in 1992 worked at the now-closed Lakeridge Tennis Club as general manager, according to his website. He and his wife, Deb, a personal trainer, have a son, Ian.

(Sean Crom) July 22, 2021 5:22 PM PT Print The body of a famed endurance athlete has been found near the summit of a peak in Yosemite National Park days after he went missing, authorities said Thursday. Fred Zalokar, 61, of Reno, Nev. was reported missing a day after a solo day hike July 17 to Mount Clark, a popular peak for for mountaineers. His body was found Tuesday. Zalokar hiked from Happy Isles to the summit using an off-trail route from Bunnell Point in Little Yosemite Valley, the National Park Service said in a statement.

Zalokar, 61, went on a day hike Saturday from Happy Isles to the summit of Mount Clark using an off-trail route from Bunnell Point, and he had not returned to Yosemite Valley as planned, the park said. Yosemite asked for anyone who might have seen Zalokar or might have helpful information to email the park at yose desk officer@nps.gov or call (209) 379-1992.
