A group of farmers who belong to farm the Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa (TAU SA) says it will not be able to afford a salary increase for its workers to be in line with the National Minimum Wage recommendation.
The recommendation is that workers’ wages are supposed to increase to R 21, 69c an hour this year, but the union say farmers can’t afford that.
Currently workers get R220 a day.

Four suspects between the ages of 17 and 32 are expected to appear in the Bultfontein Magistrates court today.
The suspects are all facing charges of attempted murder after off-duty Welkom Public Order Police (POP) members were led to a BTK gang member with numerous stab wounds to the head.
The incident occurred on Sunday, December 20, in Bultfontein.
The POP received information from Bultfontein CSC about an ongoing gang fight. The injured gang member willingly led the police to a nearby tavern where he pointed out his assailants.
Two of the four suspects were immediately arrested.
Following an attempt to escape, the police gave chase and managed to detain the last one of the four suspects.
FREE STATE – On Tuesday the 15 December 2020, Members of Welkom POP Reaction team currently deployed in Bultfontein to deal with gangsterism received information about people selling drugs whilst busy with crime prevention at Phahameng Location, IYO PARK Section.
They proceeded to the said house and requested to search the house wherein they found 29 Mandrax tablets and cash. Permission was granted. A 32-year-old woman was arrested for dealing with drugs.
Members proceeded to a house in Alexandra Street, Phahameng, and arrested a 52-year-man and a 27-year-old woman for dealing in drugs after 100 Cat drugs and cash were found in their house.
A 29-year old member of IJP gang was later arrested for possession of dangerous weapons after a knife was found in his possession.

NATIONAL NEWS - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to remain vigilant on the roads during this festive season following three major crashes this past weekend.
“They are urged to choose daytime driving and to keep their lights on at all times. Motorists are also warned to refrain from speeding and from driving under the influence of alcohol,” RTMC said on Sunday.
Nineteen people lost their lives during three accidents in the Free State, Limpopo and the Western Cape.
“A major crash where a single vehicle overturned occurred on Saturday, at approximately 8:10pm on the R719, 2 kilometres from Bultfontein towards Welkom in the Free State Province,” RTMC said.
