into a closet. i instantly said, are you okay? she says yes but i m freaking out. there s a shooter, mark, and i heard the bullet. i heard the bullet shots. and i said, okay, well, calm down. we re on our way. i wanted to run there. i didn t know how many cops had been there because she just got dropped at school. so my instinct was to run in and try to save her. just a few minutes ago, we heard from the l.a. county sheriff s department and they gave us an update on the suspect. the suspect was later identified as one of the victims who was found in the quad. he is identified as a 16-year-old male whose birthday is today. the weapon that he used was recovered at the scene. it s a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol, which had no more rounds in it. squwe are waiting for a news conference from hospital officials and we will bring that to you when it starts shortly. but let s go to nbc s joe fryer
chris, take a it away. katy, thank you so much and we are going to continue our coverage this thursday, november 14th, on that breaking news out of california. this just in. now, we know two students have been killed. a gunman opened fire at saugus high school in santa clarita. that s about 30 miles northwest of downtown los angeles. three others remain injured and the suspected shooter, we are told, is in grave condition at a local hospital. the first shots rang out just before 8:00 this morning as students were arriving for the day. we know that is typically when these school shootings happen. they happen in the morning. the l.a. sheriff s department quickly swarmed the scene. nearby schools went to lockdown. earlier this afternoon, we heard from one of the parents of the students. i got a call at 7:30 this morning from my stepdaughter lexie screaming and crying saying that there s been a shooting in the school and the shooter ran past her and she heard bullet shots and a teacher
witnessed. she heard the bullets, she saw the shooter, and a teacher pushed her and her friend into a closet. they were in a classroom? i don t know, i didn t get that far, she showed up to school and as she was walking she heard bullet shots and saw the shooter and they got her into a closet and the rest was her screaming and crying. we have been in very little communication with her but we know she is okay. thank god. yeah, did she say if she had seen him before or recognized him? she a junior in her grade, she thinks she knows him and social media is blowing up and they know who it is. she had a class with him? i don t know that. we re not sure. we don t know anything about the other student. have you been able to talk to
