This building behind me is one of San Franciscos great landmarks, a designated landmark . It is on the National Register list of historic buildings. A couple of times a week this is filled with a marketplace. 100 farmers. They are here on saturday. The Farmers Market is out front, and also on tuesdays we have about 60 farmers out front. So we worked with the architects to meet the city requirements. We are the new family on the block and dont want to be in conflict with our neighbors and were putting in tremendous time and effort and money to address neighbors requests to the point that nothing we can do to make the project viable. If you can see the plans is not to build a luxury home, to indulge ourselves, but simply to be the family of two parents and four children, so we can grow as a family and raise our children in the family and maybe we can finally give our children the dog they wanted for so many years because as a renter, you cannot even have a pet. This has been an emotionally and financially draining process for us. I just hope and i trust the commissioners can judge our case by the facts, and assure us when we followed the requirements, followed the rules, followed the process, did everything that we could, that there is an end to this and there is a justice to the end. And the process is not being abused
Of course the at one extreme, if you go into a project by kind of just a bunch of workers and over alls come on the site and you figure out what to do, its totally out of control. You can, the other extreme is spending a lot of money figuring out everything in advanced in a remodel means explore tory demolition which could cost more than the inefficiency of discovering. You just have to attempt to make an appropriate judgment for the level of preplanning on your particular job. Thats why another reason why its extremely useful to have a contractors advice during the planning process not just trying to come up with a number but to talk about constructability and the degree of detailing required.
