Mexico native participates in Virtual Service Week 2021

BUFFALO — Anthony Yost, of Mexico, was among nearly 200 Canisius College students who participated in Virtual Service Week 2021. Yost is from the Class of 2022 and pursuing a degree in accounting. Service Week included virtual and in-person engagement activities and each day centered around a different theme. Among those themes represented during Virtual Service Week: racial justice, health care and mental health, hunger and the homeless, the environment and sustainability, as well as issues surrounding borders and migration. Virtual Service Week 2021 was organized and sponsored by the New Buffalo Institute (NBI) at Canisius College. The NBI aligns research, service and educational programming toward the many neighborhoods on Buffalo’s East Side, including Canisius’ own Hamlin Park neighborhood. Additionally, the NBI is committed to social justice, and provides a welcoming place for community partners to convene, voice concerns and exchange ideas.

2021 PLAY/GROUND summer art festival seeking artists

The annual PLAY/GROUND art event is returning to the Queen City this summer.  PLAY/GROUND will be held from August 6 through August 15 at four separate locations in the City of Buffalo. BICA (The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art) and Resource:Art are calling on local artists to participate in this year s art extravaganza. “We are excited to share our vision for this year’s art PLAY/GROUND, which will connect downtown Buffalo and the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood through art,” said Emily Tucker, director of Resource:Art.  “Our goal for this year is to bring diverse communities together to reflect on unique perspectives, heal and grow together as one strong Western New York community. Our selection of this year’s venues is intentional, and we hope to engage new artists and new communities to create a shared experience that is engaging and accessible for all visitors.”

April 28, 1887: The Comet reported news of interest to local baseball fans. “The Johnson city (sic) Reds were defeated last Friday at Bristol, on the Base Ball (sic) Knob, by a score of 40 to 8. It was a glorious victory for Bristol. About 8000 people witnessed the game and cheered enthusiastically as the good plays were made. The features of the game were many. Time of game 4 hours. Umpire R.E. Dixon.” April 28, 1892: The Comet reported, “The Johnson City Auxiliary to the American Bible Society held its first anniversary at the M.E. Church on Tuesday night, the 25th inst.” “Inst.” was a common abbreviation used that meant “in the same month.”
