would you say washington is not flexible? now you know why there is blame sort of being put on all sides and why all sides see some political value in this, because they have those clips that they can use. they can take it to their base and say, this is what the other side is doing to you to shut down the government, and they re using that as leverage to score some political points. one other thing is that republicans in the senate are unhappy with the idea of another cr. they ve been passing crs for the last year, for the better part of the last year, and they re just exhausted. republicans controlling the house and the senate and the white house, they were supposed to bring back regular order. they were supposed to pass a budget through the normal appropriation process. the fact they re on their fourth cr, not something the military likes, not something republican budget hawks like, and there is some not something any family that has to make these tough choices every day, eve
spending a tremendous amount on public schools, on public pensions and people are sort of blind to it because they re able to write this off. well, no longer, that s going to be the case. i think that governor cuomo realizes his head could be on the chopping block if they don t make some really changes. instead of digging deep and saying how are we going to reverse this, he said we re going to sue. i think it s absurd. david: rich, i tend to agree with sabrina, on the other hand, there are people who are going to suffer from this and particularly some millennials, right? yeah, if you make a w-2 paycheck, that is you re employed by somebody and you make a high salary, and you re trying to buy a house, and houses are very expensive in these very states like new york and california, that happen to have high income tax rates, you know, it s an impossible situation. and so, i think the republicans kind of made an unforced error here. they listened to the budget hawks and they took away th
get to the meeting. here is what senator john thune said about where the democrats are in trying to work with republicans these days. they clearly have a strategy that runs, tries to obstruct at all costs. they were not willing participants in tax reform. i hope they are on some of these issues we mentioned earlier. but the fact is, as we head into this election year, there is a very different philosophy. as you listen to chuck schumer and other democrats talk, these are people who believe that the federal government in washington knows better how to spend your money than you do. shannon: do they get something done on immigration or daca? that is an excellent question, shannon. and i have trouble seeing it happening. first of all, you have the republican party itself split out some of these issues. you have the budget hawks who want to cut spending and then you have others who want to cut spending but not for the military. they want more money for the military. so you ve already
investment to raise the gas tax? it s a viable option. i don t support it. i don t support raising taxes. i try to find a way to use the current revenue stream we have and use it more effectively and efficiently. where was that argument during the tax cut debate? i m not for raising taxes, period. no, but using the resources we have to pay nfor it when the jct, the joint commission on taxation says that the tax bill even dynamically scored will add a trali itrillion dollars to th economy? look at the economy right now, look at the unemployment rate, i know you factor that all in. look at the jobs markets. and i ve never seen so many budget hawks in all of my life when obama was giving out phones. continued to give away and $8 trillion and now $1 trillion, it s really not going to happen,
building tunnels and highways. jon: unless you re barack obama until you find out there weren t as many shovel-ready projects. will there be republicans having just cut taxes and added a trillion dollars to deficits in the next decade? how many people who portray themselves as budget hawks, as fiscal hawks will be willing to go along with something the president talks about a trillion dollars, we think what we re getting out of the white house is not a trillion in federal spending but maybe a quarter of that in federal spending that he hopes will leverage public works spending by private concerns. will enough republicans be willing to go along with that? i don t think we know. i think we will know, however, once we see whether they keep the government open at the end of january, whether the republicans get together on that, on increasing spending levels that will allow that to happen. whether they get together on an immigration fix that the democrats will have leverage on.
