Communication on Maui remained difficult Wednesday. Some people walked periodically to a seawall, where phone connections were strongest, to make calls.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green says he has instructed state Attorney General Anne Lopez to work toward a moratorium on land transactions in the Lahaina area that was devastated by fire last week. Green said he has heard of people asking about purchasing land owned by people in the disaster area and wants to make sure no one loses their land. Green also said Wednesday that 110 people are confirmed dead and that 38% of the disaster area has been searched. Additionally, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has opened its first disaster recovery center on Maui. Most public schools on Hawaii’s second-largest island have also begun to reopen.
