Amendment to Read Before Grade Three Could Impact Fourth Graders Because of Pandemic

9 & 10 News May 27, 2021 An amendment to the Read before Grade Three law could impact fourth graders next school year. The bill, currently under consideration in the State Senate, would pause the state’s retention requirement this year due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and extend it to next year’s third and fourth graders. “In the midst of a pandemic and a struggling economy, adding another stressor to our students and families doesn’t seem very reasonable,” said Buckley Community Schools Superintendent and Elementary Principal Jessica Harrand. Read by Grade Three was a law put in place in 2016 to flag students who were reading below their grade level. If they’re flagged, they must repeat the third grade. This proposed amendment would mean the same for fourth graders.
