They were marking five years since the start of what became known as the Umbrella Movement, a campaign for greater democratic freedom under chinese rule. Five years after it first shielded the protesters from the pepper spray and tear gas. In 2014, the umbrella protests faded away. But this year theyre back with a vengeance in far more violent form.
