Schoolteacher Jimione Buwawa chose to coach Vanuabalavu after captaining the side to win the 1974 island zone final. The following year, Vanuabalavu lost the competition shield and their attempt to regain it in 1976 also failed. But in 1977 Buwawa was determined to put Vanuabalavu back on the winners list. The only way he believed he could do it was to actually take field again.
