Counties concerned about withholding of Covid vaccine doses
Public health officials in five counties are expressing confusion, dismay and frustration over the state’s decision to withhold each county’s share of Covid-19 vaccine doses this week.
State officials say those counties fell below administering at least 80% of the doses it had received. Jennifer Havens, the CEO of UnityPoint Health in Grinnell, says Poweshiek County scheduled this week’s vaccinations on Friday and weren’t aware state officials would check the schedule on Thursday.
“It’s not that we’re hanging onto them,” she says. “We had every dose accounted for.”
Gov. Reynolds denied the counties doses because they hadn't met the 80% threshold. Counties include: Buchanan, Chickasaw, Hancock, Poweshiek and Washington.
Important update:Â
The Virginia Department of Health has launched a centralized preregistration system for COVID-19 vaccinations: vaccinate.virginia.gov. This replaces the local surveys that had been used by health districts across the state.
If you have already preregistered with your local health district, your information and place in line should be maintained. You can check on the new site to see if you are in the system.
The state has also launched a hotline, 877-VAX-IN-VA or 877-829-4682, for those who do not have computer access. Callers can speak to someone in English or Spanish, or ask for a call back in 100 languages.Â
