As the state Environmental Protection Act marks its 50th anniversary, state officials and environmental advocates say IDNR’s reviews are hindered by incomplete records and a staff slashed by nearly half compared with two decades ago.
As cities around the world look to rid their waterways of remaining pollution, researchers are installing artificial islands brimming with grasses and sedges. The islands’ surfaces attract wildlife, while the underwater plant roots absorb contaminants and support aquatic life.
“Any riverfront improvement opportunity should be part of a master plan that recognizes the Chicago River system as the wondrous natural resource it is rather than the uncared for alleyway it used to be,” said Friends of the Chicago River.
