Thousands of emperor penguin chicks in Antarctica have died due to a "catastrophic breeding failure" caused by low levels of sea ice, which is a result of climate change. The decline in sea ice left the chicks vulnerable to the elements as they had not yet developed waterproof feathers. Multiple penguin colonies across a vast area experienced simultaneous failures during the breeding season.
