The Licking County NAACP plans to highlight several points of local Black history as part of its Black August series celebrating Black Licking County Legends
Black August was established in the California penal system on Aug. 21, 1971, to celebrate and honor Black excellence, resilience and revolutionaries.
Bryanna Stigger, president of the local NAACP, wrote an essay on the power of the celebration. She noted that August is a significant month to revere Black revolutionaries and freedom fighters. For me, Black August represents an opportunity to venerate the brilliance and resilience of our ancestors, she wrote. We must keep our joy while wading in these tumultuous waters because, as my grandmother always said, the world did not give it and the world cannot take it away.
