DWR News Release
Several agencies are asking for anglers to keep any lake trout under 25 inches that are caught at Flaming Gorge in an effort to improve the health of the fishery. An annual fishing tournament (that was canceled last year due to COVID-19 concerns) will resume this year to incentivize anglers to help in this effort.
The Mac Attack Derby is a collaboration between the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, and the Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce to focus on the restoration of the trophy fishery at Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The fishing tournament was created in 2019 to encourage anglers to target and harvest small lake trout in Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
SALT LAKE CITY Utah s fishing records continue to fall.
Officials from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said Monday that a 31-inch Bear Lake cutthroat trout caught in January officially broke a state record for largest of the species caught and released in the state.
Travis Hobbs caught the fish at Bear Lake on Jan. 17, according to the agency. His catch broke the previous Bear Lake cutthroat trout catch-and-release record of 27 ½ inches set by David MacKay on May 25, 2020.
State wildlife officials have a record book of fish caught in the state. It features dozens of catch-and-keep, catch-and-release, spearfishing, setline and archery fishing records.

SALT LAKE CITY â If you catch any lake trout under 25 inches at Flaming Gorge Reservoir, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and other agencies are encouraging you to take it home and eat it.
According to DWR, the popular reservoir currently has too many small lake trout, and anglers can help by removing them from the water permanently.
Flaming Gorge is known to produce some of the largest lake trout in the United States, and DWR officials say removing the smaller ones will increase the fishery s overall health.
