The JavaScript ecosystem is hopelessly fragmented so here is another runtime: Deno is now a company

Would-be Node.js successor gets $5m cash injection Tim Anderson Tue 6 Apr 2021 // 16:41 UTC Share Copy Deno, the JavaScript runtime from the creator of Node.js, is now a company with nearly $5m to fund development – though its developers say it will remain permissively free. Deno 1.0 was released in May 2020 by Ryan Dahl, Bert Belder, and Bartek Iwańczuk. Dahl, the original developer of Node.js, had reflected on what he considered to be his design mistakes, some of which he saw as unfixable, and therefore created Deno. The new runtime ticks boxes for modern development trends, including being part-coded in Rust and having first-class support for TypeScript. Like Node.js, the project depends on the Chromium V8 JavaScript runtime.

Deno 1 8 preps for GPU-accelerated machine learning

Deno 1 8: Node js alternative gets out of the box GPU accelerated machine learning

JavaScript could usurp Python for mathematical programming, claims Deno team Tim Anderson Thu 4 Mar 2021 // 08:36 UTC Share Copy The Deno project has released version 1.8, including experimental support for the WebGPU API enabling out-of-the-box GPU accelerated machine learning. Deno, which runs JavaScript outside the browser, is a project co-founded by the creator of Node.js Ryan Dahl, in part to fix design mistakes in his earlier effort. Despite these flaws, Node.js is embedded in today’s web development stack as well as being used by server frameworks such as Express, so Deno has an uphill battle to win adoption. Deno is developed in Rust and includes built-in TypeScript support.
