Sven Gatz, the Brussels-capital region’s minister for the promotion of multilingualism, said Belgium’s language rules are “not very future proof” and need to be reformed in the wake of the health crisis. The current laws, which date back to 1966, list French and Dutch as the official languages of Brussels, which is the host city of the European Union. Mr Gatz claimed “the hiccups that the country encountered” with its response to the COVID-19 outbreak has triggered “the first movements” to reform Belgium’s language
