Shell takes Maersk drillship for four Malaysian wells April 7, 2021, by Nermina Kulovic Offshore drilling contractor Maersk Drilling has secured a contract with Shell for the 7th generation drillship Maersk Viking to drill four development wells at the Gumusut-Kakap project offshore Malaysia. The contract is expected to start in December 2021, with an estimated duration of 150 days. The firm contract value is approximately $34 million, including a mobilisation fee. The Shell-operated Gumusut-Kakap project lies in waters up to 1,200 metres (3,900 feet) deep. It is its first deep-water platform in Malaysia. The first oil from the project was produced in October 2014. The contract includes five additional one-well options for work offshore Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam.

The 80-meter vessel, a new purchase for Bruneian owners JISCO Marine Sdn Bhd, will be employed on long-term charter for the Bruneian oil and gas company. The ship was officially accepted into charter on February 17. Vroon Offshore Services (VOS) Singapore secured a two-year ship management contract for the vessel at the end of 2020, though the company said early months of the project involved taking delivery of MWV Falgout in China, mobilizing the vessel and delivering it on to the end client.

The rig has now won this award for three consecutive years. Since arriving in Brunei Darussalam in autumn 2017, Maersk Convincer has consistently been one of the best performing drilling rigs in Shell’s employ. Maersk Drilling’s successful customer relationship with Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) dates back to 2007, and Maersk Convincer will this year be joined by the drillship Maersk Viking which is set to commence operations in Brunei Darussalam in March.
