France aims to spend €30 billion on decarbonising its economy

France wants to spend €30 billion on decarbonising its economy, speeding up its target of becoming Europe s first major country to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The money is part of the so-called France Relance recovery plan, which is designed to address the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. The whole investment plan is worth €100 billion, representing the equivalent of one-third of the annual state budget. Just over €40 billion of this will be provided by the European Union, as part of the bloc s so-called Recovery and Resilience Facility in order to support businesses, rethink production models, transform infrastructure and invest in training.

European Parliament backs carbon border tax

European Parliament backs carbon border tax Share London | The European Parliament has backed the bloc’s push for a carbon border tax on imports from countries such as Australia, in a plenary vote on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) that gives Brussels the political imprimatur and momentum to press ahead with the plan. The European Commission is expected to present the details of the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) in June, with a view to getting at least a pilot scheme up and running by the start of 2023. The European Union is looking for a road out of coal dependency.

MEPs vote to place carbon tax on select imports from outside EU

MEPs want to place a carbon levy on certain imports from less climate-ambitious countries, in order to raise global climate ambition. The idea behind the levy is to stop so-called carbon leakage , something that happens when there is an increase in greenhouse gas emissions in one country, due to an emissions reduction by a second country with less strict rules. Lawmakers in Brussels worry that the EU’s increased ambition on climate change might lead to carbon leakage , meaning that global climate efforts will be hampered if European production is just moved to non-EU countries that have less ambitious emissions rules.

Aiming for zero Covid-19: Europe needs to take action 15 Febbraio 2021 3 minuti di lettura Vaccination is a critical element for our way out of the pandemic. But the hope to reach herd immunity in Europe by the end of the summer is fading, as the roll-out of vaccines proves to be a major challenge. In addition, the emergence of new variants from Brazil, the UK, and South Africa is a warning signal that we may be confronted with lower protection from vaccines. Furthermore, history demonstrates that vaccination cannot single-handedly control a virus: it needs concerted efforts and a combination of public health measures. A global exit from the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021 seems unlikely if not impossible. To avoid lockdown cycles as experienced over the past and present year, we need to curb the spread of the virus as soon as possible, and choose the path of sustainable recovery. The European strategy needs to markedly shift its focus from long-term and nationwide lockdowns due to hig
