1 construction worker killed, 2nd injured in elevator plunge

NEW YORK (AP) A construction worker was killed and another was critically injured Wednesday in an elevator plunge at a Bronx building undergoing renovation, authorities said.
Firefighters responded to the five-story building at 20 Bruckner Blvd. in the Mott Haven section shortly after 8 a.m. for a report of an elevator collapse, a Fire Department spokesperson said.
Two workers were inside the elevator when it dropped several floors, the spokesperson said. One of the workers was killed and the other was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The New York City Department of Buildings is investigating the accident. “Every worker who leaves for the job site in the morning deserves to come home safely at night,” department spokesperson Andrew Rudansky said. “We are committed to finding out how this tragic incident occurred, and if we find that safety rules were ignored, we will
