USA TODAY The Osborn School District in Phoenix is urging its teachers to get COVID-19 vaccines, even offering information on where to get the shots on designated workdays.  About 90% of the pre-K-8 district s staff have gotten at least their first dose, school officials say. Osborn, which has been virtual all year, plans to return to in-person instruction in March. But what about the 10% of employees who haven t gotten the vaccine? Can the district require them to? Osborn s board members have discussed it, but there s a number of reasons why districts probably won t be requiring COVID-19 vaccines for employees anytime soon.

CDC readies school reopening guidelines; Biden faces pressure

USA TODAY WASHINGTON – Pressure is mounting for President Joe Biden to deliver on reopening the nation s schools amid the coronavirus pandemic as Republicans seize on his cautious approach and parents demand more aggressive action to address what he called a national emergency. Biden was already walking a tightrope politically on the contentious issue, caught between teacher union allies who have resisted in-person learning until safety measures are assured and parents nationwide frustrated their children remain home. Now, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set to release reopening guidelines Friday, Biden will have one of the components he said was needed to achieve his goal of having most public schools open within his first 100 days in office. MICHAEL MELIA English teachers are deciding which books to skip. History teachers are condensing units. Science teachers are often doing without experiments entirely. With instruction time reduced as much as half by the coronavirus pandemic, many of the nation’s middle school and high school teachers have given up on covering all the material normally included in their classes and instead are cutting lessons. Certain topics must be taught because they will appear on exit exams or Advanced Placement tests. But teachers are largely on their own to make difficult choices what to prioritize and what to sacrifice to the pandemic.
