50 Years Ago ■Mayor Sean M. Dunphy this morning emphatically denied published reports that city residents will face a $7 jump in their tax rates this year. “That type of tax hike is impossible,” Dunphy said. “We will in no way approach a $7 increase.”.

■Freezing, bitter winds gusting 10 to 15 mph, blinding clouds of snow against windshields, and sidewalks resembling sheets of plate glass are all in store for area residents today. Television reception was reported by some area residents to be less than perfect. Winds played havoc with the outside wires making static predominate and visibility poor.
■Northampton High School will present a stage production of James Barrie’s classic tale “Peter Pan” in February. Fifty-three students will be featured in different roles. In the role of Peter will be Bill Sackrey. Wendy will be played by Sue Packard, and Captain Hook by Joe Edelberg.
