Backbench councillors on an important committee could be looking at why roadworks in town seem to take so long to complete. The Labour chairman of the scrutiny committee Jim Robbins has put in an item into the committee’s future work programme – which will have to be agreed at its meeting on Monday – calling for the committee “to review roadworks projects in the town, determine why they are overrunning, and what is causing the delays and what impact are they having . It says: “Roadworks have the reputation of overrunning in Swindon, with Bruce Street Bridges and Greenbridge seeing significant delays recently.

A SWINDON driver caught going almost double the speed limit on Great Western Way has been banned from the roads for three years and fined. Shortly before 11pm on October 25 last year, police spotted a BMW 118 racing down the 30mph section of road towards the Bruce Street Bridges roundabout at 59mph. Officers stopped the car on North Star Avenue and arrested 31-year-old Lee Black of Cagney Drive in Abbey Meads before taking him to Gablecross Police Station while the car was seized. At the station, Black failed to complete the breathalyser procedure by providing insufficient samples. He pleaded guilty to exceeding a 30mph speed limit and failing to provide a specimen for analysis at Swindon Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Officers carried out speed checks in Swindon on New Year s Eve. Police monitored vehicles in Toothill, Wanborough Road, Great Western Way, Queens Drive, Dorcan Way, Mill Lane/Foxham Way, the B4192 Liddington and Roughmoor Way, looking out for speeding and other road traffic offences. Drivers were given words of advice about low-level speeding and other issues such as the visibility of a windscreen which was obscured by ice. One motorist was given a fixed penalty notice for driving at 39mph in a 30mph zone on Wanborough Road, while nine others were reported to court for speeding offences after being caught driving at over 40mph.
