Another taxpayer referendum in Mishawaka? School leaders take first step toward 2023 vote

MISHAWAKA — Mishawaka school leaders are beginning to discuss what the district’s next referendum attempt could look like. With current referendum money set to expire in two years, the district broadly outlined plans Wednesday night for a referendum push that could bring voters to polls in May 2023. Mishawaka leaders say they’re beginning the conversation now — two years ahead of a potential vote — to promote transparency and community engagement throughout the referendum process. “There’ll be a lot of meetings and the community has always been welcome to attend all of those meetings,” Board President Holly Parks said. The Mishawaka district passed two referendums in 2016. One helps cover operational expenses such as technology needs, employee raises and other educational programs. The other, a controlled projects referendum, supports facility improvements, such as safety and accessibility upgrades across Mishawaka schools.
