SHARK investigators last summer found sheriff s deputies at Kentucky cockfights. Hindi owns a rivet-manufacturing plant and has money to fight cockfighters via a nonprofit called Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) that he founded in 1994. Admirers have included Bob Barker, former host of The Price Is Right, who donated $1 million to SHARK a decade ago after the group fought Pennsylvania pigeon shoots that continue, with SHARK still protesting the killing. Hindi has been beaten up by folks who don t appreciate him showing up with cameras, and he s been arrested at least twice. He s been whipped with a dog leash while trying to stop a pigeon shoot. He posts recordings of death threats on SHARK s website. Eight or so drones used to document events where SHARK isn t welcome have been shot down, Hindi says.
Before becoming editor of the paper, Locher was a photographer at the State Journal-Register. Barry Locher was plenty smart, but not the smartest. He was funny, but not the funniest. He was one of the best photojournalists in the state. Others, also, took great pictures.
Barry was genuine, and on that point, he had no rival. He rose from photography intern to editor of the State Journal-Register, running the newsroom from 1999 until 2007. After his death from cancer, his wife Debra says that she received cards from people Barry photographed years after he stopped taking pictures to become a boss.
“He was just a down-to-earth person who could relate to people with no effort at all, and that always showed up in the pictures he ended up with,” says Rich Saal, former SJ-R photo editor. “People respond to the person who’s taking their picture – you can tell a person’s manner by the pictures they take.”
Springfield alderman cited for violating city’s mask mandate
Ward 1 Ald. Chuck Redpath was cited last week for violating the city’s mask mandate.
The citation stems from the Springfield City Council’s Dec. 1 meeting, where Redpath took off his mask for prolonged periods of time while seated at his designated spot around the horseshoe.
Per an emergency order signed by Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder last month, masks must be worn in all spaces that welcome the public, which includes council chambers.
Police Chief Kenny Winslow pulled Redpath aside during the meeting to ask him to put on his mask or be cited. Redpath said he had a medical condition that exempted him from the mandate. He subsequently disclosed in media interviews that he has minor asthma.
Photo by Bruce Rushton Nora isn t much on pugs or catching mice or coming out of the basement, but she has charm nonetheless. I suck at killing things. This is why I got a cat. After recently trapping a mouse in my kitchen and seeing its desperate eyes while being dispatched, squeaking all the way, to the trash bin outside, I thought it better to have its friends hunted down and eaten. And so I filled out an online application, offering to provide feline foster care for the local animal shelter and figuring I d keep the first mouser. My preference was old – I need a cat for eight years or so, not 18 – and black, to match Champ The Wonder Pug, and I d heard that such cats are tough to place. After not hearing back for awhile, I visited the shelter, where they were giving away cats. I explained that I d be happy to donate $200
people all over the community are saying why hasn t there been an arrest. yes. i was hearing that a lot. as the case dragged on, the whodunit became the talk of the town. people are very, very aware of the killing in this community. bruce rushton covered the case for the springfield register. any time we write about this in the newspaper, it s the most clicked on thing, or close to the most clicked on thing. it s a puzzle her. it s almost a game of three card monte. rushton said no one thought stephen instigated the violence. everyone the reporter spoke to had only good things to say about stephen including two teachers who taught his daughter alex. both agreed they had never in their teaching careers seen a father so devoted to his children. when i talked to his co-workers, they all knew alex and sydney had a pretend bake session. he had animal crackers he was putting in the toy of and playing with his kids.
