Could crime tip the scales of the mayoral race?

SHARE: Last summer, calls from progressives to “defund the police” in New York City following the murder of George Floyd caused the New York City Council to vote on shifting $1 billion from the NYPD’s budget and played a role in the fizzling of New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson’s bid for mayor and last year’s loss by former Staten Island Rep. Max Rose. But one year later, on the heels of a high-profile shooting in Times Square and as the city grapples with an uptick in violent crime, shootings and anti-Asian hate crimes, calls to defund the police have largely gone quiet. And some believe that this surge in certain crimes could tip the scales of the June 22 Democratic primary for mayor and clear the way for a more moderate candidate to prevail as more New Yorkers go back to their offices and the subways.

On Thursday night, the eight top candidates in the Democratic primary will face off in the first televised debate of the campaign season. For some, the two-hour event is a chance to land direct punches in conflicts that have been simmering on the trail for months. For others, it’s an opportunity to introduce themselves to voters, many of whom are just tuning into the race now.

The fall of the Barrons?

Could the Barron political dynasty be overthrown? Charles Barron is vying to win his wife Inez Barron’s New York City Council District 42 seat, which she is leaving this year due to term limits. The majority-Black district encompases East New York and its subsections such as Spring Creek and Starrett City. Charles Barron previously won the same seat in 2001. His wife won the Assembly seat in 2008 and they swapped seats when Charles was term-limited out of the City Council in 2013, with Inez running successfully to replace him and Charles then replacing her in the Assembly.  But some have grown tired of the Barrons’ seat swapping, particularly local politicos who say the district is in need of new leadership, pointing to the neighborhood’s high rates of poverty and unemployment, and a recent upward trend in shootings as some of the most pressing issues in the district.
