exploring, getting out there and learning more ways to do new things that we haven t even envisioned yet. sandra: if you could stand by with us. a bit of a celebration. neil, you had a chance to talk to this crew yesterday. you can see jeff bezos. he has the cowboy hat on there. they just emerged a few moments ago. wally was in celebration. bezos brother mark and the crew members. i saw champagne popped. you did. it is funny, too, with this. we forget there was no really aggressive physical training for this flight. a lot of citizen would be astronauts who had to consider and weigh the training that goes into becoming an astronaut and going into space. what i found most intriguing here the biggest thing they had to worry about is getting fitted with their uniforms.
a successful launch and landing today for billionaire jeff bezos and three other passengers. their journey lasting a mere ten minutes and ten seconds, went just past the edge of space. this kind of manned mission is by far not the first, the first american was alan shepard on may 5th, 1961. but this could be a giant step towards many more trips for wealthy civilians. two, one. reporter: blast off. blue origin s new shepard on its flight carrying the richest man in the world jeff bezos into space. i couldn t pick a best part. reporter: also on board, bezos brother mark.
family members have already died and the numbers of people or bodies we are hearing being taken to the cemeteries in the city make it clear that the official figures of perhaps two or 300 dead every day is a massive underestimated at a lot higher than that. jeff bezos, the richest person on planet earth has succesfully flown into space. this is the moment the amazon founder lifted off from the texan desert. his brother mark was there along with two others the oldest and youngest people ever to go into space. the rocket travelled nearly a hundred kilometres above the planet s surface. and then they came down. this is the momentjust ten minutes after they started with the space capsule landing back in texas.
ja jeff bezos brother mark, a volunteer firefighter, he is making this trip with his brother and best friend. that is what we have, kristen and rachel here as well. as you watch this, rachel, what do you think? i mean, i can t help but start to get a little excited here. when you cover launches, anderson, as you know, they usually don t take off on time. so you can t get really too excited until the astronauts are strapped in their seats and on board. this is obviously not an orbital mission so they don t have to do that as far in advance. we re seeing them in that holding bin up there. so shortly in just a few minutes we re going to see them cross the gantry and do the process ingress where they get into their seats. crew member 7, it s a role unique to blue origin. that s the 7th crew member because there are six crew members that can possibly be in the capsule. as we know there are four today. they ll help them buckle in, strap in, and they ll do the
