author of pope john paul ii, a biography , what are we seeing here? and that s the swiss guard moving out, they of course are the symbolic bodyguard of the holy father and looks as if they re getting into position for the next part of the ceremony which of course will be revelation of who the next pope is. megyn: so they re getting close. is it a situation there would be a staging area behind the scenes where the new pope would be now wearing his new papal vestments and waiting to come out? yes, i think as somebody else was saying it s the room of tears, i m sure it was given that name for a reason. there must be raging emotions going on inside that man right now whoever he is. he has to pick between a small, medium and large set of vestments made for him by the papal tailor, and after that, he again comes back out and meets what were his brother cardinals and are now his subordinate cardinals. megyn: and this balcony that we see and we ll show it to you again, this is where t
the day-to-day basis of the roman curia needs to be improved. also, there are a lot of other areas in which the church could do a better job in articulating the message. so the cardinals all last week were talking about that and i think whoever walks out on that balcony is going to walk out with the mandate from his brother cardinals, as well as their collaboration in trying to address these issues to bring the church up to shape and up to strength. megyn: what would be the argument for going with someone as you say, inside the curia. i can see the argument going with somebody on the outside and the not going with anyone connected to the vatican bank scandal and others they ve suffered, but what s the argument for going with someone inside that circle. if the cardinals elect to vote someone presently a member of the curia, the reason for that, they believe that he has the inside knowledge and the will and the courage to be able to reform it from within. if you were to take somebody
trying to put it as far as possible and he said better way to play for yankees than pope. and the way the yankees are playing might have it fill in. over the weekend we heard that he met with several of his brother cardinals in informal setting and many were impressed by the common sense statements he made. he wasn t trying to impress them, wasn t running for the office, saying, here is what we need to do, it s up to us and it s our duty and people came away saying that s a smart guy. megyn: how about angelo scola? the archbishop of milan. he is a very reverred figure in milan. he may be a little bit too much of a reformer for some people because he has not been part of the vatican insider circle, called the curia. he s been up in the land and prominent in italy, but not within the vatican. megyn: that s true with cardinal dolan as well. very much so, yes, but if it s scola, it be may be that they re bringing somebody in to clean house in the vatican. megyn: how so?
the church that pope emeritus up to whether or not to release it so the cardinals. cardinals would like to see something about it. what do you think will happen here? well, when the pope is did is he said the only people who could read the report were him and his successor, but he did give the three cardinals who prepared the report permission to talk about it with their brother cardinals, and there is a great push for that. certainly america s cardinal, francis george from the arrive archdiocese of chicago, he wants to know what s in that report. the french cardinal wants to know what s in that report. in part, because they want to know exactly what is going on inside the vatican that they don t know about, and you hear all these rumors and speculation. they want to know what those three cardinals found out, and they also want to know what the extent of the problem is because it s going to help them figure
morning, chris. they met in the sinnod room in the pope paul vi auditorium. they learned how the translation machines work. they have devices at each seat that allows them to vote electronically. they learned how that went. there was a prayer this morning and there was a welcoming address from cardinal angelo sedano who is the dean of the college of cardinals. so then they had a coffee break this morning and we understand from chicago s cardinal george and washington, d.c. s cardinal that that was essentially a getting to know you period. you ve got to remember that almost 60% of these cardinals have been elevated just in the last eight years. so they don t know each other well. so they re trying to meet everybody, take a sense of their brother cardinals and as they deal with the issues of the church. that is what these congregations are about at this point is what is the state of the catholic church and what are the issues that need to be dealt with?
